Environment

Protection, preservation, sustainability and stewardship
As part of our ongoing commitment to environmental protection, preservation and sustainability, we work every day to reduce our environmental impact and set the bar for environmental stewardship. This is in keeping with the commitment of all J.D. Irving, Limited (JDI) companies to continually explore innovative new ways to lighten our environmental footprint.
We are proud to have achieved certification to the ISO 14001: 2004 environmental management systems standard.
Current initiatives
We are taking aggressive action to phase out the use of Ozone–Depleting Substances (ODS) on our vessels, well ahead of global regulatory requirements. These ODS substances include R22 used in air-conditioning and Halon used in fixed fire suppression systems.
We are doing our part to eliminate discharges of raw sewage into the harbours and coastal waters in which we operate. As part of this effort, our new vessels are fitted with state-of-the-art sewage treatment plants, while our older tonnage is refitted with sewage holding tanks and/or treatment plants.
Our bases and shore facilities follow full waste-recycling programs over and beyond industry standards.
We have initiated a fuel consumption reduction program. Preliminary studies have shown that through optimization of vessel speed we can reduce our fuel consumption by as much as 25%.
Even simple practices in our day-to-day operations count. We require all our vessels, and encourage our employees, to discontinue the use of plastic bags. We have estimated that through this initiative our vessels and employees can save up to 100,000 plastic bags annually.
With a constant focus on R&D, we are working to create future generations of tugs that will be both more efficient and more environmentally-friendly. We are currently working with manufacturers and design engineers towards a “Green Tug” concept: a fuel–efficient vessel powered by battery and specialized generators.
